BACKGROUND: Meropenem is a member of the antibiotic class of carbapenems, which are broad-spectrum antibiotics that possess activity against several drug-resistant organisms. Notably, the carbapenems maintain activity against extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing organisms. Additionally, the spectrum of activity of the carbapenems, excluding ertapenem, includes Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Meropenem is FDA-approved for the treatment of the following infections due to susceptible grampositive, gram-negative, and anaerobic organisms: uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections, intra-abdominal infections, complicated appendicitis and peritonitis, and bacterial meningitis (≥ 3 months of age only).1
